Apple Inc. is planning to launch the largest iPad yet, according to reports.
Bloomberg spoke with sources who said the new extra large iPad would have a screen measuring 12.9 inches diagonally. The iPad is currently available in 9.7- and 7.9-inch displays.
Production on the jumbo iPad is slated to begin early in 2015, according to Bloomberg's sources.
Word of the newer iPad model comes amid reports that Apple's new iPhone 6 will be released with a larger 5.5-inch display model, following the smartphone industry trend toward larger phone models, or "phablets." The phone will also release in a 4.7-inch model.
Apple is expected to hold an event on September 9 to debut the new iPhone 6. The phone is also expected to have a better camera, improved battery life and a new iOS 8 operating system.
According to TIME, Apple's current iPad models have been unable to compete with larger smartphones released by the company's Asia-based competitors.
The XL iPad's screen size would be comparable to the largest MacBook Air model.
